Post-production FeedBack

-          The front cover looks youthful and inviting it’s a great way to attract the younger audience as well as alert the focus of folk and rock music what’s going on.

-          The content page is a piece which is inviting to read however the next page the writing could be a bit bigger so people don’t have trouble differing from your background picture and white font.
-          Good use of colour codes

-          Fonts aren’t suitable, change the texture cover should be inside the magazine

-          You could change the colour for some of the font on the front cover like the black for example

-          The contents page is really good, there’s anything I could think of to change

-          I like how you use the background of the building on both the pages. However it’s kind of hard to see the writing

Preliminary Task & Main Task

Preliminary Task

In this preliminary task we have to create a college magazine front cover and a college magazine contents page. The deadline to complete this course work by is 24th October 2013. Our preliminary coursework will all be display on a blog.
I will be carrying out some research for my college magazine for instance questionnaire. This questionnaire will be used as research to find out what my target audience is looking for and what kind of ideas I could add that I might not have thought of at first.
Also a textual analysis will have to be complete by 17th October 2013. I will be analysing a college magazine cover. I will be writing about the convections of a magazine cover and also the denotations and the connotations of the front cover, who the magazine is targeted at, and write what the magazine cover seems to reveal about the college.
We will have to take original photos that we have taken ourselves to use in the college magazine and in the main task.
Main Task
For the main task we have to make a music magazine front cover, a contents page and a double page spread including the article.
I will have to create a questionnaire to found about what my target audience is looking for and depending on the genre of the music magazine I will need to find out what their interest is.
I will need to do a photo shoot of a medium long shot as the front cover. The contents page and double page spread isn’t specified therefore I could use any shot that I want. The article will have to relate to the genre of music and whatever the topic is in the double page spread.

Music Magazine Final Product

This is the front cover of my music magazine. Instead of using a female model I have decided to use a male model. I didn’t conform to conventions because we now living in the ages where we, the audience, don’t only look at women features. The males gaze puts the audience in the view of the photographer. We see how others see women in their perspective and see them as an object and nothing more.

For my magazine I am targeting those from the ages of 12-18. Since I am doing that I have used a young models so that the audience can relate back to them. The uses and gratification theory helps identify what are the consumer needs for example surveillance.

Instead of using or changing the mise en scene, the background I have decided to use the background that was originally there. This is because the lighting conditions are quite unique. You can see the contrast in white and black and the lightings are at the bottom so it gradually gets darker at the top.

If you look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, buying magazines is somewhere at the bottom of the list. Consumers buy magazines for multiple reasons but looking at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs they use it for self-actualise, esteem and belong. All these connect with one another and so using a young model and someone who dress similar to this age group they are able to relate to them one way or another.

For my contents page I have use the NME contents page as a reference. As I have mentioned before I would be using some kind of design in my magazine just like KERRANG has done so for their masthead. In this case I have use a snowy theme on the heading and subheadings of my magazine. This is because this is the winter special issue. This means that for this special issue there will be a lot of big named artist on the list that will be appearing for example Florence & The Machines.  On the very left side of the magazine I have putted a dark gradient shade. This is to create the effect that the contents page was photo copied.

There are many features in this contents page which attract my target audience for example the pictures on the page. Looking Richard Dyer’s star theory (the star as an ideology), you can see how the pictures can relate to them. The models are young and I have used both genders. Their certain beliefs and value is something that relates to the audiences own this creates a feeling of closeness and personal relationship.

For my double page spread I have used the mise en scene to fill up both pages of the double page spread. This is makes it feel like the audience is there too as the mise en scene surrounds the whole page although it still separates them but creates this feeling of closeness.

I have shot a medium long shot and conforming to conventions I have made the model take up one whole page. This is very common as most people rip pages out of magazines for posters.
The ‘A’ logo is use as an iconography. I did this because it’s a logo and it represents the Auburn magazine. People who rip pages out of magazine are still able to identify which magazine it came from by the iconography.  There is this continues red them colour. Red has a lot of different representations in this case I am trying to show passion, and strength. The artist is still a rookie artist and this article shows more about himself to the audience. By doing so it fulfils specific gratifications for example personal relationship. This creates a relationship between the artist and fans which bring them closer to one another.

Music Magazine - Front Cover Draft

This is the draft for my music magazine front cover. I haven’t finalised all of the details of the front cover yet however it is all coming together. The house style and colour for my music magazine will probably change to a different font and the colour scheme probably will be red, black and white. This colour scheme is more befitting my indie/rock music genre. Currently the masthead is gold however I may change it to a colour which matches the photo more.

The masthead for my magazine is in upper-case. This is another conventional feature of a magazine. In a lot of magazine their masthead is in upper-case. They've done this to make it eye catchy and so that it would stand out more from the rest. There I have also conform to that convention and made my masthead big and bold.

Currently this is the image I am using however I think I would most likely change it to an image that I’ve shot a few weeks before. I am currently contemplating on which photo would be the best for my front cover and looks more professional and sophisticate.

Music Magazine Contents Page Draft

This is a draft of my contents page. Through research and planning I have come up with an idea of what the contents page would look like. I the magazines I have looked at are: Q, KERRANG, NME, and MOJO.

Currently I haven’t decided on what colours to use for the contents page that’s why currently it’s in black and white. The colour scheme for the contents page will be similar to the colour scheme on the front cover. When I have decide on what colour to use for the magazine and as part of the magazine house style I will then use the same colour on the contents page.  As for the images I plan to add a few more to fill up the page. These images should relate to the magazine.

As for the content of the page I will be adding names of popular indie/rock artist. This is to attract the audience interest and will intern convince them to buy the magazine.
