Music Magazine Final Product

This is the front cover of my music magazine. Instead of using a female model I have decided to use a male model. I didn’t conform to conventions because we now living in the ages where we, the audience, don’t only look at women features. The males gaze puts the audience in the view of the photographer. We see how others see women in their perspective and see them as an object and nothing more.

For my magazine I am targeting those from the ages of 12-18. Since I am doing that I have used a young models so that the audience can relate back to them. The uses and gratification theory helps identify what are the consumer needs for example surveillance.

Instead of using or changing the mise en scene, the background I have decided to use the background that was originally there. This is because the lighting conditions are quite unique. You can see the contrast in white and black and the lightings are at the bottom so it gradually gets darker at the top.

If you look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, buying magazines is somewhere at the bottom of the list. Consumers buy magazines for multiple reasons but looking at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs they use it for self-actualise, esteem and belong. All these connect with one another and so using a young model and someone who dress similar to this age group they are able to relate to them one way or another.

For my contents page I have use the NME contents page as a reference. As I have mentioned before I would be using some kind of design in my magazine just like KERRANG has done so for their masthead. In this case I have use a snowy theme on the heading and subheadings of my magazine. This is because this is the winter special issue. This means that for this special issue there will be a lot of big named artist on the list that will be appearing for example Florence & The Machines.  On the very left side of the magazine I have putted a dark gradient shade. This is to create the effect that the contents page was photo copied.

There are many features in this contents page which attract my target audience for example the pictures on the page. Looking Richard Dyer’s star theory (the star as an ideology), you can see how the pictures can relate to them. The models are young and I have used both genders. Their certain beliefs and value is something that relates to the audiences own this creates a feeling of closeness and personal relationship.

For my double page spread I have used the mise en scene to fill up both pages of the double page spread. This is makes it feel like the audience is there too as the mise en scene surrounds the whole page although it still separates them but creates this feeling of closeness.

I have shot a medium long shot and conforming to conventions I have made the model take up one whole page. This is very common as most people rip pages out of magazines for posters.
The ‘A’ logo is use as an iconography. I did this because it’s a logo and it represents the Auburn magazine. People who rip pages out of magazine are still able to identify which magazine it came from by the iconography.  There is this continues red them colour. Red has a lot of different representations in this case I am trying to show passion, and strength. The artist is still a rookie artist and this article shows more about himself to the audience. By doing so it fulfils specific gratifications for example personal relationship. This creates a relationship between the artist and fans which bring them closer to one another.
